PETER BASSETT
Dr
Peter Bassett is a writer, speaker and broadcaster on opera - particularly the works of Richard Wagner. He was closely involved with the 1998 and 2004 Adelaide productions of the
Ring
(including as Dramaturg and Artistic Administrator for the first Australian production in 2004) and the 2001 Australian premiere of
Parsifal
, and a consultant for West Australian Opera's 2006
Tristan und Isolde
. His writings on Wagner have included
A Ring for the Millennium
(1998, translated into Finnish 1999),
The Nibelung's Ring
(2003, reprinted 2004),
Wagner's Parsifal
:
the Journey of a Soul
(2000, new edition 2008) and
Richard Wagner's Tristan und Isolde
(2006). He has recently published a large, full colour volume:
1813: Wagner & Verdi
.
Peter lectures on Wagner's works in Australia and abroad, compiles and edits opera programs, and is a regular contributor to Wagnerian journals.
He leads opera tours around the world for the Patrons, Friends and Supporters of Opera Australia and Renaissance Tours.
Peter served for twenty years in the Australian Foreign Service in embassies in East and West Europe, Asia and the Pacific and was, for a further decade, Official Secretary to two Governors of South Australia.
