Prof Michael Ewans
 

Professor Michael Ewans, classical music academic from Newcastle NSW, gives his insights into Leos Janacek's first opera,   written in 1887 based on Bohemian Legends of Sarka in Dalimil's Chronicle and produced for the first time in 1925 in honour of Janacek's 70th birthday.

 
Michael Ewans (MA Oxford, PhD Cambridge) is Conjoint Professor in the School of Drama, Fine Art and Music at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He has specialized in directing plays and chamber operas, translating Greek tragedy and comedy, and writing books and articles which explore how operas and dramas work in the theatre. He is the author of Janacek's Tragic Operas, Georg Buchner's Woyzeck, Wagner and Aeschylus , Opera from the Greek: Studies in the Poetics of Appropriation and a complete set of accurate and actable translations of Aeschylus and Sophocles in four volumes, with theatrical commentaries based on his own productions. More recently he has published Aristophanes: Lysistrata, The Women's Festival and Frogs (2011), and Aristophanes: Acharnians, Knights and Peace (2012) in his own new translations with theatrical commentaries. He is currently working on a new book whose working title is Drama, Music and Performance in Opera.

In recognition of his achievements, Michael Ewans was elected in 2005 to a Fellowship of the Australian Academy of the Humanities.
